SUMMARY:
In recent years, the development of industries has grown a lot with population expansion and consequently a global concern about environmental pollution, mainly due to chemical elements that can be identified as major dangerous pollutants. Among these chemical elements we can highlight the heavy metals zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd), these have received a certain amount of attention due to the significant increase in activities. In human health and in some animals, the presence of a certain amount of zinc and cadmium, even in low concentrations, can cause some concern. One of the concerns is the effluents generated by the oil industry, where we have a large presence of organic and inorganic substances and with a very varied composition of these substances that can generate a major environmental problem. These heavy metals have received a certain amount of attention due to the impacts they can generate on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, where they have received regulations established by resolution number 401 of 11/04/2008 of the National Environmental Council (CONAMA) in Brazil to mitigate these impacts. and assign minimum and maximum quantities to certain effluents and consequently minimize and control their contamination. The present thesis aimed to investigate the use of graphite/cork electrodes with 50% cork to quantify zinc and cadmium in real samples of tap water, produced water and catchment pond water. Where the results obtained clearly demonstrated that the application of this electrode proved to be quite efficient in the detection of Zn and Cd metals with a detection sensitivity of 0.095 µg/L with a quantification limit of 0.317 µg/L for Zinc and detection sensitivity of 82,824 µg/L with a limit of quantification of 876,080 µg/L for Cadmium. And in general, we can highlight the ease of creating the electrode, as well as the electrochemical method due to its low consumption of reagents, speed of analysis and characteristics that lead to the use of this technique as another way to determine zinc and cadmium in various effluents.
