New occurrences, assessment risk and distribution of Lamiaceae from Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern, Brazil

RESUMO:

This study presents the new occurrences and conservation status of Lamiaceae species to the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). The data was obtained by collection efforts conducted in the state and analysis of specimens from RN deposited in visited herbaria of the northeast Brazil, as well as, digital information of specimens accessed from SpeciesLink database. To infer the risk assessment of each species, it was used the online tool GeoCat, that calculate the AOO and EOO of a species based on its geographic coordinates and the IUCN criteria. It was found 30 species of Lamiaceae to RN State, where 16 are native to Brazil and nine of these are cited for the first time to the state. Among native species, eight are endangered to vulnerable, whereas three are least concern, two are near threatened and four have data deficient to infer their risk assessment. The Caatinga domain has the higher number of Lamiaceae species, on the other hand has less than 1% of its extension protected by environmental laws. This study reveals the worrying stage of Lamiaceae in RN, needing conservations action to preserve the natural formations remains and insure the quality of the habitat presents on it, by creating new conservation units to increase the protected area already existent. Finally, it’s also clear, from available data, that an important part of flora of the Rio
Grande do Norte State remains undisclosed by the low investments in field work to collect specimens and botanical studies.
