SUMMARY:

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), alsoknown as kala-azar, is achronicinfectiousanthropozoonosisofworldwidedistribution. It isconsideredanurbanandpublichealth problem. Affectedindividualsmayexpressvariedsymptoms, dependingonthespeciesoftheetiologicalagentinvolvedand its interactionwiththe host. Ifnotdiagnosed in time andtreatedproperly, it has high mortality. The diseaseaffects more vulnerableportionsofthepopulationduetomigrationfromthecountrysidetothecityand irregular occupations in peri-urbanareas; dwellingsnearuncharacterizedlandscapes; lackofaccesstotreatedwaterandsewage;difficulties in accessing a qualityhealth system, amongothers. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) iscausedbyanobligateintracellularprotozoan, Leishmania infantum, andhasas its vector thenocturnalsandfly, Lutzomyialongipalpis, aninsectof 2 to 3 mm in lengthwelladaptedtotheperidomesticenvironment. These parasites adapttonumerous hosts, thedomestic dog beingthemainone – since it makes thecorrelationof rural-urbanspaces, fillpublicspacesandinteriorsofhouses, as familymembers. The human-dog relationshipbecomesproblematicwhenthereisexcesshumanpopulationordisorderlygrowthofpopulationsand as a consequence, surplus dogs in publicplaces.Thisexcesscanresult in the spread ofvariousaccidents, sufferinganddiseases, such as canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). In fact, oneofthemainwaysofcontrolling AVL isactingdirectlyontheseropositivereservoirs (dogs). In response and in anattempttoabsorbpartofthesurplus dogs, several countries haveshelters for dogs, but in Brazil, manyhaveemerged in a disorganizedway, overcrowdedandwithrisksofcontaminationofinfectious-contagiousdiseasesamongindividuals.The studyaimedtoanalyzeanddescribetheepidemiologicalscenarioofcanine visceral leishmaniasis in themetropolitanregionof Natal, RN from a studyof a temporary dog shelterandthecontributionoftheseshelters in endemicareastothemaintenanceofthisdisease. For this, qualitativeinformationfromtheformansweredbytheshelter staff, differentdiagnosticmethodologies for CVL andentomologicalsurveyofthe vector in theareaneartheshelterwereused.  Usingthestudy as a model for other dog shelters in endemicareas, it ispossibleto move towardspublicandsanitarypolicyguidelines for theselocationsandthuscontributetopublicand animal health.
