ABSTRACT

Vibrational State (VS) is described as a sensation of intense vibration throughout the entire body, generated spontaneously or self-induced, in which the subjects keep themselves in a state of psychophysiological relaxation. People who perform this technique report mental and emotional changes after VS installation, such as: relaxation, willingness, clarity of thought, emotional balance, improvement of thinking, well being, among others. However, these are subjective observations, being the measurement of phenomenons or bioenergetical elements like this one still a great challenge to science. This research aims to systematically explore the vibrational state in the neuroscience field. Therefore, electroencephalography (EEG) was used to observe if the subjective sensation of VS is followed by changes in the brain's electrical activity. Besides that, in order to evaluate if the VS causes any positive effect in cognitive functions such as attention and memory, a word recognition test was applied before and after performing the VS technique. Questionnaires concerning socioeconomic and health data, profile of mood states, sleep quality and psychological inventories were also used. However, the primary focus was the statistic analysis of the electroencephalographic data. Two groups of volunteers were analyzed, the first one was composed by 14 people that have performed the technique for at least 10 years (Experienced Group - GEXP), and the second one composed by 11 people that never had performed the VS before (Control Group – GCONT). The GCONT group was instructed about the VS technique before the experiments. Statistic analyses were done to compare the EEG data of both groups in four conditions: Basal, Relaxation, Non-VS (period in which the subject is involved in the task, but still did not achieve the VS) and VS (period in which the subject achieved the VS). It is important to mention that no volunteer from the GCONT group claimed to have achieved the VS properly. In this way, the comparison between the two groups was only made in three conditions: Basal, Relaxation and Non-VS.   In order to do so, the Mann- Whitney U test was used with a threshold of p<0.05. Generally, the GEXP presented a higher  alpha 2 frequency band power (9.5 – 11.0 Hz) in all conditions. During the Non-VS period, the GEXP also presented a higher power in the alpha 3 frequency band (11.5 – 13 Hz) in the left temporal area, and gamma 1 (30.5-55.0 Hz) and gamma 2 (65.0-80.0 Hz) in central, parietal and left temporal areas, but a lower power in the theta 1 frequency band (3.5 - 5.0 Hz) in central-parietal regions. Regarding the within group statistical analysis, among the conditions, the paired Wilcoxon test was used. It was possible to observe statistically significant differences (p<0.005) mainly in central regions, in theta 1 (3.5-5.0 Hz), being greater in relaxation when compared to Basal and Non-VS, in GCONT group, and with Non-VS and VS, in GEXP group. In GEXP, gamma 1 power (30.5-55.0 Hz) and gamma 2 power (65.0-80.0 Hz) was diffusely higher in VS when compared to the other three conditions. Regarding the GCONT group, only the Basal condition presented higher gamma 1 power (30.5-55.0 Hz) and gamma 2 power (65.0-80.0 Hz), when compared to relaxation. The increase in theta 1 during the relaxation, especially in GCONT group, may be associated with a higher level of sleepiness in this group during this condition. The increase in alpha 2 during the Non-VS and VS may be associated with attention and cognition processes (Ray, 1985; Klimesch, 1999; Dolppermayr, 2002; Fell, 2010). On the other hand, the increase in gamma power in VS practitioners found in this work and in previous works with meditation practitioners (Lehmann, 2000; Lutz, 2004; Fell, 2010) may be associated with changes in mental and cognitive processes such as: attention, operational memory, learning and conscious perception although, additional analysis must be performed to exclude the possibility of muscle artifact interference in the EEG data. These results suggest that when engaging the VS task and during VS, the subjects from the experienced group can keep themselves in a state of alertness, but with a higher level of relaxation and concentration.   However, more detailed data studies, as well as other experiments with different protocols, and a greater number of subjects and longitudinal studies would be necessary to corroborate this hypothesis.
