AREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
SUMMARY:

Introduction:Individuals with neurological disorders in the central nervous system may experience limitations and impairments in their upper limbs, which hinder the performance of basic activities of daily living, such as feeding oneself independently. Various Assistive Technologies (AT) have been developed to assist and enhance the functional performance of these individuals. Objective: To develop and validate a low-cost adapted utensil called "Facileat" for patients with neurological disorders. Materials and Methods: This is an observational, clinical, cross-sectional, quantitative study, with a sample that will be recruited in a non-probabilistic way for convenience and intentionally, through contact with patients registered at the Clínica Escola da FACISA - Santa Cruz /RN. Participants will be assessed using the Sociodemographic and Clinical Profile Assessment Form, hand dominance using the Portuguese version of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) and cognitive function using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). After the evaluation, they will be submitted to the Food Task, in which they will try to feed themselves using a common cutlery and the “Facileat”. At the end of the task, performance and satisfaction assessments will be applied through the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM); functional independence, by the Functional Independence Measure Scale (FIM); the usability and satisfaction of the device; respectively through the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Quebec B-QUEST 2.0 User Satisfaction Assessment with Assistive Technology. The final device requirements will be reviewed by the User Experience and Expectations Questionnaire. Statistical analysis will be performed using the JASP 0.17.1 software, analyzed descriptively, using measures of central tendency and dispersion. The outcome variables will be analyzed using the Friedman test if the measurements are non-parametric, and the two-way ANOVA if the data are parametric.
