RESUMO:

Yeasts of the Candidagenus are one of the most common causes of bloodstream infections associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, mainly affecting immunocompromised patients. In this context, the objectives of this study were to identify yeasts obtained from blood cultures of patients with candidemia attended at tertiary hospitals in Natal city, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. In addition, weevaluated some of themajor virulence factors of Candida spp., including the ability to adhere to human buccal epithelial cells (HBEC), biofilm formation, hemolytic and phospholipase activity. We analyzed 70 isolates of Candida spp. obtained from blood cultures between March 2011 and March 2015. The Candida species isolated were identified as follows: Candida albicans (24), the Candida parapsilosis species complex (18), Candida tropicalis (18), Candida glabrata (7) and
a single isolate each of Candida lusitaniae, C. krusei and Candida ciferrii. Candida species showed different peculiarities in terms of expression of virulence factors evaluated in vitro.C. albicansstrains were more adherent to HBEC than all the other Candida species. C tropicalisstrains were considered strong biofilm producers. Strains belonging to the C. parapsilosis species complex were able to produce hemolysins, while C. glabrata was also able to lyse erythrocytes and to produce phospholipase. These results suggest that although C. albicans is still considered the most virulent
species of the Candida genus, Non-Candida albicansCandida (NCAC) speciesare also able to produce the virulence factors which play an important role in bloodstream infectious caused by these yeasts. We also found that the prevalence of NCAC strains was higher thanC. albicansand also the possible first case report of candidemia due toC. ciferrii described in Latin America.
