SUMMARY:

Memory is a fundamental adaptive mechanism that promotes the survival of individuals. Within long-term memory, a declarative and a non-declarative form can be distinguished. In both animals and humans, declarative memory supports the capacity to recall facts and events. Recognition memory is a central component of declarative memories; failures in the processing of these memories lead to devastating consequences, which characterize the early symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. The novel object recognition test is a non-spatial and non-aversive task, where learning occurs incidentally, and it is widely used to assess the molecular mechanisms involved in recognition memory processing. Different brain regions are necessary to discriminate objects. Of particular importance, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the hippocampus (HIP) play distinct roles during the processing of this type of memory, including judging when objects were seen and their familiarity. In this regard, it is known that dopamine plays an important role in novelty detection, and its signaling is mediated by the protein kinase activated by cAMP, PKA. Among PKA's functions, the activation of the transcription factor CREB stands out, which promotes the regulation of BDNF synthesis, important in the plastic processes involved in memory and learning. Disruptions in PKA-mediated signaling can lead to disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and age-related memory loss; therefore, to develop therapeutic strategies, we must understand the neural circuits underlying normal cognition.
