RESUMO:

In adolescence there are various physiological and social changes that can promotes damages of health in adolescents. At this phase, many adolescents seek to build and strengthen a social support network, which is defined by the number and availability of friends, family, neighbors and social groups that can be trusted and supported. In addition, they present sleep deprivation, poor sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Considering that adolescents present innumerable problems of sleep, anxiety and depression; and that social support is related to health, the aims of this work is to analyze the relationship between the perception of satisfaction with social support, quality and duration of sleep, daytime sleepiness and anxiety and depression in adolescents from a federal educational institution. The sample consisted of 385 high school students from technical courses, who completed the Social Support Satisfaction Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Pediatric Day Sleepiness Scale, the Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Identification of health problems questionnaire. The mean age of participants was 16.3 ± 1.0 years, from both sex (♂= 43.1%, ♀= 56.9%) that study in the morning shift (55.3%) and afternoon shift (44.7%). The adolescents presented an average of general social support of 47.6 ± 12.1, with satisfaction with friends being the most favored (17.30 ± 4.74) and satisfaction with social activities the most impaired (7,59 ± 2.98). Poor sleep quality was observed in the majority (71%) of the adolescents, with an average of 7.17 ± 2.72. In the evaluation of daytime sleepiness an average of 18.31 ± 4.90 was observed. Time in bed was 6:42 ± 1:18 h, and the wake-up time and bedtime were 6:25 ± 1:28h and 23:06 ± 1:25 h, respectively. According to the correlations, it was observed that the lowerthe perception with social support, the worse the sleep quality (r= -0.42), the greater the daytime sleepiness (r= -0.34), the shorter the duration of sleep (r= 0.15), the student wakes up earlier (r= 0.10) and the higher the chance of the adolescents to trigger symptoms of anxiety (r= -0.52) and depression (r= -0.60). The results indicate moderate to strong correlations between social support with sleep problems and anxiety and depression. From these results, it is worth emphasizing the importance of developing strategies that can contribute to the improvement of social support, aiming to reduce sleep problems and mental health problems in adolescents aiming at a better quality of life.
