TITLE:

AmazonMitoFish: Investigation of Mitochondrial Genomes in Amazonian Fish

KEY WORDS:

mitochondrial genome; Amazon basin; phylogeny; Cichlidae.

PAGES: 34
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Biologia Geral
SUMMARY:

South America is known for hosting some of the largest river basins in the world, such as the Amazon, the Orinoco, and the Paraná-Paraguay. Particularly in the Amazon basin, there is an unparalleled wealth of freshwater biodiversity, although the total number of fish species has not yet been fully cataloged. In this study, the goal is to expand genomic knowledge by analyzing 34 mitochondrial genomes of neotropical cichlids and Amazonian fish of both evolutionary and economic importance, such as the pirarucu. Analysis of these mitogenomes can provide crucial insights into the taxonomy, phylogeny, and evolution of species, filling gaps in the understanding of aquatic life in the Amazon basin. The data from the mitogenomes and genomic analyses of Amazonian fish will be available on Amazon Mito Fish, an online resource dedicated exclusively to this purpose. This platform will centralize essential information on the mitogenomes and genomic analyses of these fish, providing an accessible and reliable source for researchers, conservationists, and natural resource managers interested in the aquatic biodiversity of the Amazon region.
