SUMMARY:

Autoimmune diseases are chronic illnesses that affect health and life quality. The association of infections caused by viruses and bacteria with autoimmune diseases has been described in last years. These associations have been observed in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). GBS is an inflammatory polyneuropathy characterized by an immune-mediated response against myelin sheath and axons of peripheral nervous system. This study aimed to analyze genes involved in GBS. Transcriptome analysis of patients with GBS in the acute phase (T1), plateau phase (T2) and recovery phase (T3) was performed comparing the gene expression profile. it was observed that T1 has an intense expression of genes that are associated with leukocyte migration, differentiation and activation. These genes are important in the inflammatory response. The number of differently expressed genes remains high at T2, decreasing only at T3. The IL17 signaling pathway appears to have an important role in triggering GBS, since the genes belonging to this pathway, such as IL2, IL4, MMP9, JUN, CXCR8, remain altered. Altered expression levels of these genes are present in other autoimmune diseases. After 3 years of T1, patients still had 87 differently expressed genes showing that despite the regression of clinical symptoms, patients did not fully recover considering their transcriptome.
