SUMMARY:

In this work, a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (PMTU) will be developed, implemented, and evaluated with the aim of contributing to the acquisition of concepts related to organic functions through the theme of essential oils. PMTUs are teaching sequences based on David Ausubel's Theory of Meaningful Learning (TML) and can enhance the learning of organic chemistry. It is recognized that this model can increase the capacity for content acquisition, provided that it is well-designed and properly implemented. It is worth noting that content assimilated meaningfully is remembered for a longer period, which is an advantage of using this teaching methodology, particularly because the research subjects are students in the 12th grade who are preparing to take the National High School Examination (ENEM). The content addressed in this research is one of the most important in terms of the number of questions in the Natural Sciences area, where the subject of Chemistry is included. Given the above, it is expected that the PMTU will assist teachers in basic education in teaching organic functions using essential oils, enabling students to comprehend such content and relate it meaningfully to the context in which they are situated. Thus, through scientific learning, it aims to stimulate their critical learning.
