SUMMARY:

The occurrence of difficulties in the learning of Natural Sciences by many students is a common and even justifiable fact, considering that several theories, concepts and nomenclatures addressed in the study of many areas of this science, are not part of their daily experiences. For these reasons, it is necessary to seek didactic resources that streamline teaching, enabling a better learning of the subjects addressed by Chemistry. From this angle, this work aims to elaborate and evaluate a didactic sequence oriented to approach the contents of chemical element and chemical periodicity related to the periodic table, based on didactic strategies that were planned and applied diversified activities exploring theoretical and practical aspects of the contents appointed. The work was developed with 35 students from the 1st grade “A” of high school, morning shift, from the Escola Estadual Professor Calpúrnia Caldas de Amorim, Caicó-RN, with a didactic sequence of six blocks with two combined classes, constituting a total of twelve lessons. Each block was divided into three parts, allowing students to absorb knowledge through different didactic mechanisms, intertwined with the traditional teaching methodology. The data were collected through questionnaires with open questions in the school space. For the treatment of the data, the analysis of the answers in the questionnaires was used, since it aims to induce, in the student, the curiosity for the knowledge related to Chemical Elements, Periodic Table and Chemical Periodicity. It was observed that the highest percentage of students did not accumulate knowledge about the topics covered in previous years, presenting difficulties in understanding and applying structural concepts, as well as recognizing the presence of elements in everyday materials. In addition, many have difficulty interpreting, thereby producing gaps in the teaching / learning process.
