SUMMARY:

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is characterized by the student's immersion as protagonist in the teaching-learning process, actively participating in the construction of their knowledge, and stimulates the development of competencies and skills. The rural environment has a space of countless possibilities and particularities that need to be valued and thought of in the teaching environment. Each student carries with them knowledge acquired through daily experiences, from the culture of the reality in which they are inserted and, in the case of students from a rural environment, they bring knowledge related to this place. Meeting this context and using a PBL approach, this research aimed to develop a cultural exhibition with the cassava theme, with emphasis on the process of manufacturing cassava flour in a rural school context. It was intended to develop competencies and skills, as well as to provide understanding of some chemical concepts, in a public high school third grade night class, in Vera Cruz - RN. Initially, a semi-structured survey was submitted to characterize the group that guided the research, which found that 68.57% of the students live in rural areas and 54.28% worked or had worked with cassava. The 35 students were divided in groups and faced with different problems related to the theme in three moments called “mediation”, in which they collected answers and solutions that were presented in the cultural exhibition. As a theoretical and practical base for the students, texts, videos, a lecture with a specialist in cassava-culture and a visit to a traditional flour factory were selected. The research was conducted through participant observation, characterized from qualitative data that were collected through audio-photographic records and field notes, as well as semi-structured questionnaires according to the moments of the activities. It will be made the analysis of the texts prepared by the students for evaluation and discussion of the results. From a student self-assessment in Likert scale at the end of the project, positive judgment was found for the development of competencies and skills, such as oral communication (94.12%), group work (94.12%) and curiosity and willingness to learn (97.6%). Two chemistry quizzes, applied at the beginning and at the end of the project, show positive results for some chemical concepts. As conclusion of the research will be elaborated a didactic-pedagogical notebook directed to high school teachers, as educational product, with the description of the cultural exhibition and/or activities sequence.
