SUMMARY:

Chemistry is the science through which one seeks to understand the properties of substances, proposing representations for the structures and mechanisms of atomic interactions in the constitution of all materials. In this context, knowing the electronic configurations of atoms and ions, despite being an abstract theme, is of great importance as it constitutes basic knowledge for understanding the various contents studied in the discipline at all levels of education. Theoretically, electrons are distributed at energy levels around the nucleus of an atom, and one of the most widely used features to facilitate understanding of these electronic distributions is the Linus Pauling diagram. However, some elements present experimental data that lead to a different configuration, for example: Cr, Cu, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt which cannot be explained by the Pauling diagram. Therefore, the present work aims to use diagrams developed by Rich and suter and to analyze if this new model helps students to have a better understanding of the electronic configurations of transition atoms and ions and the phenomenon that these diagrams try to describe or explain. The elaborated research had a qualitative methodological approach and had as participants subjects students of the 2nd period of Degree in Chemistry of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), in the municipality of Mossoró-RN. As a data collection instrument, a survey questionnaire was initially used to confiscate students' prior knowledge of electronic distribution content. In the next step, a workshop was carried out as a tool for teaching and learning the electronic configurations of atoms and ions. As preliminary analyzes of the questionnaires, it was observed that 74% of the students have difficulty in moving between phenomenological observations and explanations through the electronic configurations of atoms. There was also a high conceptual error in the elaboration of electronic configurations of atoms and ions, as well as some alternative conceptions on this subject. It is important to highlight that the activities proposed so far in the workshop proved to be adequate to characterize the relationship between the phenomenological aspects and the electronic configurations and also the teaching and learning of the proposition under study.
