RESUMO:

Torture, the banalisation of violence and the relativization of human rights that have become
evident in our society constantly knocks on schools' doors. Although the practice was not
created in the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), it was in this period that it became
a state policy during its validity and it serves to illustrate very well the importance of creating
a culture of human rights in the country. Although it is a multidisciplinary task, the teaching of
history can contribute significantly to its promotion, given its emancipatory potentialities. The
process of recognizing differences, respect, cultural tolerance and peace are important
components of human rights. This work falls into the following milestones: what can history
teaching do to understand and minimize the historical effects of violence in Brazilian society,
which have repercussions on the historical discipline in the classroom? How can history
teaching contribute to our students' human rights training? The intention was to study the
process of human rights emergence, consolidation and evidence in the Western society and
in Brazil, to trace its parallel with the documents regarding education for the teaching of
history in human rights, and to propose ways of acting in creating a culture of human rights
at the Oswaldo Pessoa school, PB.
