SUMMARY:

This work is a research that identifies, through a literature review, the current national and international archival description standards. The objective is to design and develop a prototype of a computer system that allows simulating the application of these standards in the technical processing of the collection of Diário de Natal/O Poti and, consequently, also contribute to their dissemination on the Internet; For this, it is necessary to popularize the prototype database with a sampling of the collection, respecting the existing typologies, in order to exemplify the practical application of standardization and its advantages in the dissemination of information and, especially, the exchange of data in national and international level; In order for these interventions to be in accordance with Information Science, Information Management requirements and the principles of Archivology, the following actions will be carried out: a scientific investigation that provides a reflection on how Archivology fits into the universe of Information Management and how the disciplines Information Management and Document Management relate to informational treatment; Analysis of the description fields to be adopted, so that they are in line with the rules in force and survey of the documentary typologies existing in the collection; Regarding the analysis and development of the computational prototype, we sought to raise the current status of software architecture for the analysis of its applicability and its evolutionary potential; These procedures were guided by the action-research methodology. In this method, the researcher is concomitantly participating in the research and, in turn, seeks to solve or clarify problems proposed in the observed situation. As theoretical support, were researched authors that deal with Information Management, Document Management, Archivology and archives organization. As a result will be presented proposals that allow the treatment of the acquis as recommended by the International Council of Archives (ICA). It is hoped that this research will contribute to an effective Information Management applied to the technical processing of the Diário de Natal/O Poti collection, thus creating an environment that enables the creation of knowledge.
