RESUMO:

Information behavior is one of the core areas of Information Science that studies how people deal with information including the search, use, and exchange of information when the person faces information needs. The perception of these needs is related to gaps to develop a work or an activity. This project proposes to study the information behavior of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) administrative staff, based on Wilson’s (1981) model. The administrative work routine within UFRN involves the use of a set of integrated systems and a new component has been incorporated recently, it is called Virtual Table and consists of an environment to open, manage and process electronic processes and documents. The administrative servers have to adapt to this new tool since this University is experiencing the mandatory change to electronic means. Considering such context, the research problem guiding this proposal is how the Institution can effectively assist the administrative staff in the processes of information seek and use in order to adapt to the Virtual Table system? The general objective is to propose an instrument to assist the UFRN's servers in the process of adapting the system based on the characteristics of its information behavior, and to do that it is intended to achieve the specific objectives of (A) Understanding the servers information needs regarding the use of the Virtual Table system; (B) Identifying the channels and information sources most used by the servers; (C) Characterizing the process of seeking and using the information, identifying the search practices and possible barriers perceived by the servers. It is an applied research, with a descriptive purpose and qualitative approach. It is intended to apply an interview script with 14 administrative servers. Finally, content analysis should be adopted as a data analysis technique.
