RESUMO:

Information management is one of the tools to support the decision-making processes in public administration. To this end, institutions archives should develop and reinforce an archival policy that includes record management, aiming actions to improve the production, use and location of information. In this context, this research this research questions how the lack of an archival policy interferes with the the effective management of records management practices and access to information in an University archive. Then, in an attempt to answer the research problem, it is intended to develop a proposal of archival policy for the General Archive of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). In order to achieve this purpose, the intended specific objectives are: to draw up guidelines for the archival policies of other IFES in Brazil; Perform an archival diagnosis in the General Archive of UFRN; and identify the main difficulties arising from the lack of a policy in a university archive. We intend to develop a theoretical reflection about information management and flow, record management, archival policy and the archival situation in the IFES. It will be a descriptive research with qualitative approach, to be developed through action-research. Therefore, we will seek to use data collection instruments such as: documentary research, participant observation and semi-structured interview. The field will be the UFRN General Archive because it is the central archival unit and it is the sector responsible for the elaboration and execution of record management programs and activities in the Institution. From this survey we will be able to obtain the inputs to prepare an archival policy for the UFRN General Archive.
