RESUMO:

The Library System (SISBI) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) has
adapted its activities and computerized its processes and services through information
systems. The collection management process, and in particular the process of purchasing
informational material, started to occured in 2008, automated, operationalized through the
Integrated System of Patrimony, Administration and Contracts (SIPAC). Being a management
information system, it must be developed with a view to meeting the needs of users, and
following the principles of usability. Thus, in order for the participation of the academic
community to be effective, what should be done in terms of improving the usability of the
system? In order to answer the research question, it was defined as a general objective to
evaluate the usability of SIPAC, with emphasis on the registration of requests for
informational material purchases, from the perspective of the teachers of the Center for
Applied Social Sciences (CCSA). And as specific objectives: to understand the informational
behavior of the teachers who use the system; identify possible usability barriers during the
registration process of the purchase of informational material; and, evaluate the user's
satisfaction with the interface and interaction with it. The theoretical framework was built
based on collections management, usability and information architecture, and users'
informational behavior. This was a qualitative and quantitative study, descriptive of the case.
The non-probabilistic sampling technique was used for convenience, applied to a sample of
12 teachers. The data collection was based on three instruments: a questionnaire, a usability
test, associated to the verbal protocol technique and a semi-structured interview. For the
analysis, the instruments were triangulated and basic statistics and content analysis were used
with the help of Iramuteq software. The results indicate that the CCSA teachers have good
knowledge and skills in the use of computers and the internet, they are aware that they can
participate in the process of purchasing information material from UFRN and have the
Integrated Management System for Academic Activities (SIGAA) as the system most used by
them. Teachers point to usability barriers that do not help the task, such as: the location of the
access link to the registration screen, the lack of information to register a new information
material and also the lack of organization of information, language and lack of information in
the ISBN number field. Because teachers are not always able to overcome the usability
barriers and the time required to complete the task, they are not satisfied with the activity. It is
considered that the lack of familiarity with the SIPAC and the perceived difficulties contribute
to teachers' dissatisfaction with the system and lead them to not participate in the purchasing process. It is hoped that the usability evaluation result will help in the development of a redesign proposal of the system, which will make it easier and more intuitive to carry out the registration of the request for information material.
