RESUMO:

Information management (IM) has a leading role in all types of organizations, including higher education institutions. This highlight comes from the perception of information as a strategic resource that resulted in significant changes in the informational behavior of employees and in the structures of organizations. Other factors contribute to the use of IM in universities, especially when there is growth and expansion of federal higher education institutions, mainly due to the implementation of the Restructuring and Expansion Plan of the Federal Universities (REUNI), which resulted in significant impacts in their demands, mainly in the management of administrative activities and the overload of information. Such demands require that universities use tools that had better manage the search, selection, treatment, storage, sharing and use of information, evidencing information management practices with greater relevance. The problem situation identified in the Pro-Rectory of Graduation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PROGRAD/UFRN) refers to the academic information necessary for the accomplishment of numerous work processes, where there is a lack of systematization, considering the great growth in the number of students in undergraduate education, after the implementation of the REUNI Program. This study is justified by the importance that PROGRAD has for the institution, in terms of the number of users on his services, the volume of processes, activities and documents circulating within it. Thus, the objective is to propose an information management model appropriate to the Academic Information Management Sector of PROGRAD/UFRN. In order to achieve the presented objective, the specific objectives are: a) to identify models of IM applied in other HEIs; b) map the information flow existing in PROGRAD, from the perspective of the IM; c) characterize the functionality of the "electronic portfolio" available in the academic system; d) describe the work processes of SeGIA/PROGRAD regarding the use of information and e) analyze the stages of work processes, in the light of the ecological approach to information. A qualitative study of an applied and descriptive nature was developed, with research as action research. The research was divided into four stages: problem-situation diagnosis, study planning, intervention and evaluation. To obtain data were and still will be performed: bibliographic research, documentary analysis, application of structured questionnaires, conducting semi-structured individual interviews and participant observation.
