SUMMARY:

For decades, research in Science Education has directed part of his interests to discussions involving History, Philosophy and Sociology of Sciences. The discussions promoted by historians-philosophers of science who sought to understand the historical development of science still deserve attention, building on this understanding theoretical explanatory models. Among them, we can highlight Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), French epistemologist and philosopher of science, who proposes to analyze the history of sciences, their revolutions, as well as the démarches of the scientific spirit, developing a work with profound pedagogical implications. One of the central concepts inaugurated by its historical epistemology is that of Epistemological Obstacle, which inevitably appears in the process of construction of scientific knowledge that is intended to be objective. Based on this, the objective of this work was to investigate the appearance of some epistemological obstacles in the first ideas of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) in his studies in Electricity, mainly those ideas contained in the work Experiments and Observations in Electricity, made in Philadelphia in America (1751) that will be taken as the basis for the analyzes. From this first study it is already possible to recognize the presence of obstacles, among them, the substantialist and the verbal, mentioned by Bachelard in his work The Formation of the Scientific Spirit (1938). The emergence of epistemological obstacles in the development of electricity studies in the 18th century is an illustrative case among others in the history of science. In this direction, without imposing a parallelism, knowledge of the “historical” epistemological obstacles can be useful for students to overcome the current epistemological obstacles, in the sense that the abandonment of ideas throughout the History of Science was the result of overcoming these obstacles.
