SUMMARY:

Introduction: Cardiac catheterization is an invasive procedure of great importance for diagnosing and/or treating heart disease. At the Emergency Care Unit (UPA), patients who need this procedure are entered into the national regulation system by the Internal Regulation Center (NIR) team and remain hospitalized until the scheduled date. The absence of a definition of the stages, as well as standardization of the necessary actions and a flow to be followed for scheduling at the UPA, prompted this study. Objective: To implement quality improvement tools in the scheduling process for elective cardiac catheterizations.  Methodology: A quasi-experimental, before-and-after study with a quantitative approach. It will be carried out in the second half of 2023 at the NIR of the "Nurse Maria Nazaré" UPA. In order to improve the quality of the elective cardiac catheterization scheduling process, the stages of identifying and prioritizing the quality problem, defining the measurement criteria, and evaluating the criteria will be carried out. Preliminary results: The practical work of the master's degree course, technical visits, standardization of appointments, and development of tools have produced preliminary results, which are still in their infancy as they are still being implemented. It is hoped to carry out comparative measurements of some indicators, with a view to planning interventions with the multi-professional team. Then repeat the measurements and compare before and after, with a view to resolving indicators with quality problems and optimizing the process. It is also hoped to improve patient safety by reducing waiting times for catheterization exams and encouraging greater patient turnover by optimizing bed occupancy.
