SUMMARY:

Introduction: Medication errors can lead to harm and actions at the global and national level have been studied to avoid them, aiming to promote the strengthening of patient safety barriers. In this perspective, we highlight the need to discuss personal medications, which are taken from home to the hospital, which for various reasons, may not be available in the institution. Thus, developing quality management activities, such as improvement cycles, is essential for better health care outcomes for patients who use their own medication in hospital services. Objective: To evaluate and improve the process of dispensing and administering medications to patients in a secondary hospital in the State of Ceará through a cycle of improvement. Methodology: This is a quasi-experimental design of the before and after type, without a control group, with a quantitative approach, to be performed through the realization of a quality improvement cycle in the process of dispensing and administering the patient's own medication. For this, criteria were constructed, validated with service professionals and these will be used for data collection. The analysis of these findings will occur through absolute and relative frequencies and unilateral hypothesis testing (calculation of the Z value). Partial Results: The criteria were constructed for two situations, when the patient chooses to stay with the medication at the bedside and when he chooses to leave the custody under the care of the pharmacy. The improvement interventions were projected from a pilot test to analyze the criteria. The study will respect ethical principles and is submitted to the research ethics committee.
