SUMMARY:

Introduction: Communication is one of the five main problems that affect patient safety, being the human factor related to the highest number of adverse events in health facilities. In the study hospital, communication problems during shift changes or transitions between units and services have been pointed out by professionals as an opportunity for improvement. Objective: To carry out an improvement cycle to reduce problems in the communication process between the surgical center and the surgical clinic of a university hospital.

Methods: A quasi-experimental, before and after study without a control group with a quantitative approach, using a quality improvement cycle. Three quality criteria and 8 sub-criteria were developed to assess communication between the study units. Interventions were defined according to the result of the initial assessment presented to the improvement team and defined using a guiding diagram and Gantt chart to monitor the actions.

Result: interventions related to criterion one are already being monitored, interventions of criterion two are in the team training phase after elaboration of the SOP and criterion three with its eight sub-criteria is in the validation phase of the instrument, containing the SBAR tool , which will be applied to improve communication between the study units.
