SUMMARY:

Introduction: the management of waste from health services is a set of management procedures, planned and implemented from scientific, technical, regulatory and legal bases, with the objective of minimizing the generation of waste and providing a safe route, in a way that efficient. Thus, it is essential to implement improvements aimed at waste management, aiming at the protection of workers and the preservation of public health, resources and the environment. Objective: Improve waste management and management in a university hospital in Rio Grande do Norte. Methodology: before-and-after quantitative study based on an improvement cycle comprising the following steps: a) identification of the improvement opportunity; b) analysis of the causes of the improvement opportunity (cause and effect diagram); c) quality level assessment (measurement of quality criteria at baseline); d) planning and implementation of interventions; assessment of the post-intervention level of quality. Data analysis will be carried out through the absolute and relative frequency of the level of compliance with the quality criteria with a confidence interval of 95% (95%CI) and the analysis of the improvement will be analyzed through the absolute improvement and relative improvement comparing the post and pre-intervention, considering a statistical significance of 5%. Expected results: It is expected to identify the causes of inadequate waste segregation and develop actions aimed at adapting the steps in waste management during the improvement cycle, contributing to the reduction of non-conformities in this process.
