SUMMARY:

Introduction: Health care-related infections are directly related to care procedures or admissions to health services. Among the various types of health care-related infections, primary bloodstream infections stand out as one of the main causes of in-hospital morbidity and mortality. In addition, they are among the main infections in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, associated with increased length of stay for these patients and high hospital costs, representing a worrying public health problem. Objective: To develop a cycle of improvement for the prevention of primary bloodstream infection in a neonatal intensive care unit. Methodology: This is a study of a quantitative nature, with a quasi-experimental design, type before and after, without a control group, through a cycle of quality improvement based on the primary bloodstream infections prevention protocol in the neonatology service of a hospital in the interior of Ceará, which will be held in the biennium 2021/2022. Quality criteria will be defined based on scientific references for the proper management of primary bloodstream infections prevention. Interventions will be planned and implemented in a participatory manner with the intention of improving adherence to bundles, which is a small and simple set of evidence-based practices and, when performed as a team and reliably, considerably improves patient outcomes . After the intervention, reassessments will be carried out in order to measure its impacts and identify remaining improvement opportunities that guide the continuity of local actions. Interventions will be evaluated quantitatively and also qualitatively by the care team of the sector through semi-structured questionnaires. All ethical precepts related to resolutions nº 466/2012; No. 510/2016 and No. 580/2018 will be preserved.
