SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: The Maternal Early Warning Score (MEWS) is an instrument based on changes in vital signs that allows detecting the clinical worsening of an inpatient and enables the early intervention. Its use has been able to demonstrate a decrease in maternal morbidity in several hospitals around the world. Thus, the objective of this project is to implement the MEWS in the evaluation of women admitted to MEJC wards. Method: This study is an intervention project based on the principles of quality improvement, the research will be carried out at the Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco (MEJC), a maternity hospital linked to the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and administered by the state-owned Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares (EBSERH). The target population of the research will be the nursing professionals and doctors who work directly in the care of the wards and all patients admitted to the High Risk, Joint Accommodation and Minor Surgery wards. The intervention will be developed in five stages. The first stage will be the presentation of the research to the hospital management board in order to motivate and demonstrate the importance and benefits of applying the MEWS, in a second step will be developed a flowchart of the assistance to be performed with the results found in the application of MEWS. In the third stage will be developed with the information technology sector the implementation of MEWS within the Aplicativo de Gestão dos Hospitais Universitários (AGHU), which is already widely used in the registration of assistance. The “MEWS Dashboard” will be developed to be an application that can track vital signs recorded in medical records and that can automatically rank MEWS and generate alerts for staff responsible for re-evaluating the patient. In the fourth step, a training will be conducted through illustrative classes and case studies for all servers in the research focus sectors, in order to train them to use the MEWS and the assistance flowchart. MEWS will also be presented focusing on the wards, demonstrating how the panel works. As a fifth step, a monitoring of the application of the MEWS in women admitted to the wards will be performed, and the vital signs records and revaluations alerted by the use of the application “MEWS Panel” will be monitored. Data collection will be carried out retrospectively in a survey of electronic patient records, monthly, over a period of 06 months, and may be extended for another 04 months, depending on the need for more conclusive data, data analysis will be descriptive. An inferential statistical analysis can also be used, adopting the 95% reliability level. Expected Outcomes: It is hoped that the project can awaken the change in attitude of professionals towards appropriate and timely care for all patients.
