SUMMARY:

The technological revolution has turned Internet access into a fundamental pillar for contemporary working dynamics, especially in the software industry, where it has boosted remote collaboration and legitimised the efficiency of distributed work through the Distributed Software Development (DSD) model. This model is characterised by the distribution of the specialised workforce across several countries, resulting in a reduction in development costs and greater proximity to clients. These advantages have prompted organisations to adopt the DSD model since the 1990s. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, this adoption has been significantly accelerated, forcing organisations to implement distributed operations in a hurry, culminating in the creation of new team arrangements in DSD models, and consequently, the creation of new challenges and practices relating to communication and coordination in such projects.  Faced with such obstacles, organisations are seeking to understand the best practices and approaches for implementing DSD effectively. This reality reinforces the need for new studies on communication and coordination in DSD, also considering the specificities experienced in new team arrangements. In view of the above, the study seeks to answer the following question: "How do virtual teams from different arrangements experience and overcome challenges to ensure effective communication and coordination in Distributed Software Development (DDS) projects?". Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate the patterns, challenges, and practices of different virtual team arrangements regarding communication and coordination in DSD projects. From a methodological point of view, this research is characterised as qualitative and adopts an inductive and exploratory approach, using a comparative case study to analyse and compare different team arrangements in DSD projects. Regarding data collection, the aim is to collect historical messages on communication platforms used by DSD teams and to carry out semi-structured interviews with members. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis from an abductive perspective, with the support of text mining and Large Language Models (LLM) tools. The results are expected to identify communication and coordination challenges, practices and patterns in DSD projects that adopt different team arrangements. Understanding these aspects will be essential in guiding organisations' decision-making about which team arrangement to choose, and will serve as input for plans to implement distributed working in software development projects.
