[Context] The high rates of retention and dropouts commonly present in IT courses are still barriers to be overcome, especially when related to certain disciplines and/or syllabus contents of IT course curricula, such as computer programming. In this way, eyes have been directed to undergraduate courses in the areas of technology, not only in the aspect of expanding the vacancies offered, but above all, in the search for solutions that enable educators and students to deal with the challenges of this issue. [Problem] It turns out that teaching and learning programming in higher education classes is challenging. From the perspective of teaching work, issues related to daily challenges in dealing with class time, rigid curricula, keeping students engaged, working in heterogeneous classes and with a large number of students, among other things, make it unfeasible in most cases to more individualized monitoring of the student. And yet, the high workload can harm not only the follow-up of students, who expect immediate feedback for their doubts, but also the choice and implementation of pedagogical models that are contrary to the traditional teaching model, capable of guiding teaching actions. teaching inside and outside the classroom. [Proposal] In this sense, as a way of supporting introductory programming disciplines, both from the teaching and student point of view, this study describes a virtual programming assistant that integrates a set of functionalities (and additional possibilities for managing classes and/or or educational activities) that may favor the adoption of the Mastery Learning pedagogical paradigm in introductory programming courses. [Objective] Thus, this assistant proposes to assist the teaching work in the promotion of continuous feedback, this study has as main objective to investigate how a Virtual Programming Assistant, designed with functionalities such that enable the use of the pedagogical model of Domain Learning, being able to benefit teachers and students in introductory programming courses. [Methodology] As a starting point to achieve this objective, a systematic mapping of the literature was carried out, which brought together works on the use of Mastery Learning in Computing and Engineering courses. Then, two studies were planned with about 250 students entering a higher education course in Information Technology. The first was an exploratory study carried out to better investigate the problem and build the virtual assistant proposal. The second study is in progress and aims to validate the defined proposal.
