SUMMARY:

The evaluation of professional training is developed from different methodologies and objectives, and the changes that should be adopted to improve this process from the perspective of graduates and students should be identified, complementing the evaluation system. In practice scenarios, these evaluations performed by the preceptor from the demonstration of the ethical, political, and scientific knowledge of the residents must be very clear and recorded so that the process is continuous and allows feedback between preceptor and nursing resident. The objective is to construct a guide for formative evaluation of nursing residents working in the Adult Intensive Care Unit of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital. This is a methodological study to construct an instrument for the evaluation of nursing residents. It was developed in three stages: 1) Focus Group of Nursing Preceptors; 2) Nursing Residents Focus Group; and 3) Construction of the guide for the evaluation of Nursing Residents. The research was conducted in the General Intensive Care Unit, which is part of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL). The focus groups took place from November to December 2022, lasted 90 minutes and were conducted by the moderator. The data were analyzed from thematic analysis, with the support of the IRAMUTEQ software. From the focal syntheses obtained through the focus groups of preceptors and nursing residents who work in the General Intensive Care Unit, with the support of pertinent literature on the subject, a guide for the evaluation of nursing residents was constructed, supported by the Canva tool. The study respected the ethical principles recommended for research conducted with human beings by Resolution No. 466/2012 and No. 510/2016 of the National Health Council. In the focus group of preceptors, all participants are female, aged between 34 and 50 years, with an average of 41 years. As for the time of work in the current activity, the preceptors have been there for seven years (33%) and eight years (67%). The responses of the focus group of preceptors could be categorized into four main themes: evaluation process; role of the preceptor; residents' skills; and changes in evaluation. In the focus group of residents, the participants are 67% female and 33% male, aged between 23 and 27 years, with an average of 25 years. Half of the residents have the area of training in Intensive Care and completed their undergraduate degree less than a year ago and the other half are in the area of training in Cardiology and completed their undergraduate degree two years ago. Their answers could be categorized into five main themes: evaluation process; role of the preceptor; field of practice; needs in evaluation and changes in evaluation. The development of the Evaluation Guide arose from the need to implement other forms of evaluation during the residency period according to the experience of preceptors and residents during the internship in the Intensive Care Unit. The topics that are in the assessment guide refer to what should guide the evaluation process, the role of the preceptor and the resident during the evaluation and how to evaluate using complementary evaluation methods in the residency. It is hoped, with this research, to produce positive results in the evaluation process during the residency, besides subsidizing new investigations related to the theme.
