SUMMARY:

The teaching of Cardio-oncology is essential for the training of professionals capable of dealing with cardiovascular diseases in patients with a current or previous history of cancer, considering the increasing prevalence and potential morbidity and mortality of both. This study aims to propose the matrix of essential competencies in Cardio-oncology in cardiology medical residency and understand the perception of cardiology residents during Cardio-oncology training. The study was exploratory, prospective and descriptive, involving preceptors and professors of the Medical Residency Program (PRM) in Cardiology at two Public Institutions, and Cardiology medical residents at Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes (HUOL). To develop the skills matrix, the Delphi method was used. Residents' perception used a semi-structured questionnaire. It had ethical approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP-HUOL) under CAEE number 54993422.6.0000.5292. The panel of experts was composed of 9 preceptors and 1 professor, with consensus being reached in the first round of the Delphi method. The final matrix addresses competencies in the following domains: patient care; health management; practical performance; interpersonal and multidisciplinary relationship; medical education. All medical residents from 2020 to 2023 responded to the questionnaire (N=14). A high degree of agreement was observed between the items evaluated, especially in topics related to medical education (presentation and discussion of a scientific article contributing to the understanding of cases (92%); feedback from the preceptorship contributing to improving care (92%); contact with other students, improving knowledge in the area of Cardio-oncology (68%). Therefore, the inclusion of core competencies for training in Cardio-oncology in the PRM in Cardiology represents a strategy to improve training, thus allowing better assistance in health to this patient profile.
