SUMMARY:

Cardio-oncology teaching should aim to train professionals capable of dealing with cardiotoxicity situations, whether with patients with active neoplasms or cancer survivors. This study aims to define the essential competencies in Cardio-oncology, taking into account the interdisciplinary particularities and training levels of the subspecialty, during the training process of new cardiologists. The study was exploratory, prospective and descriptive, involving the preceptors and professors of the Cardiology Medical Residency Program at two Public Higher Education Institutions, as well as all Cardiology medical residents at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital, from 2020 to 2023. It was developed in the following stages: 1) Preparation of the Cardio-oncology competency matrix in the training of new Cardiologists; 2) Consensus definition of essential competencies in Cardio-oncology by the panel of experts using the Delphi method; 3) Defining the perception of PRM medical residents in Cardiology regarding the Cardio-oncology rotation. It had ethical approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP-HUOL) under CAEE number 54993422.6.0000.5292. The main product of this master's degree was the proposal, after consensus, of the matrix of essential competencies for training in Cardio-oncology during the Medical Residency in Cardiology. The assessment by medical residents regarding the development of such skills showed a high degree of agreement between the items assessed (patient care, health management, practical performance, interpersonal and multidisciplinary relationships, medical education). A care protocol was also developed for patients who, using fluoropyrimidines, experience chest pain. By defining the core competencies for training in Cardio-oncology at the PRM in Cardiology, the professionals who will be trained will provide comprehensive health care to this patient profile, recognizing their needs and peculiarities, thus allowing for a reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with this population.
