SUMMARY:

Health communication is a nuanced and intricate process, intricately woven with a multitude of participants and components. Beyond the mere exchange of information, it encompasses a skill set that extends to active listening and mediation. Regrettably, academic training often falls short in equipping individuals with the necessary communicative prowess, potentially contributing to the challenges encountered in the realm of health communication.Hence, the objective of this study is to enrich the realm of communication skills among residents, preceptors, and mentors within the intricate tapestry of healthcare education, particularly within the dynamic setting of a university hospital. Employing a qualitative approach, we embark on an educational action research endeavor, engaging residents, mentors, and preceptors from the multifaceted residency program at the esteemed Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL). Our participants underwent an initial semi-structured interview to unravel their perception of health communication and their grasp of the art of nonviolent communication (NVC). Furthermore, our inquiry delved into the communication dynamics between mentors/preceptors and residents within the institution, examining the profound impact of such interactions on the pedagogical journey and patient well-being. Driven by the belief that the principles of nonviolent communication hold potential to enhance the exchange between residents, mentors, and preceptors, a collaborative workshop was meticulously crafted to facilitate a profound discourse on this subject. Esteemed contributors from the institution's multifaceted residency program were fervently engaged in this enlightening session. Post-workshop, participants, who identified themselves as mentors, preceptors, or residents, were graciously invited to evaluate the tangible effects of our intervention and the pragmatic feasibility of integrating NVC within the dynamic milieu of a teaching hospital. Analyzing the rich narratives that emerged from interviews demanded the deft application of the thematic categorical content analysis technique, culminating in the emergence of distinct categories. These include Communication within the Pedagogical Odyssey, The Nexus of Communication and Healthcare, Charting the Territory of Nonviolent Communication, NVC in Practice: A Perceptive Appraisal, and NVC: A Pathway to the Cultivation of Profound Communication Skills. In summation, our findings suggest that nurturing wholesome connections through communication, firmly rooted in the principles of NVC, serves as a potent catalyst in the realm of pedagogy, thereby unequivocally enriching the healthcare landscape. Our study advocates for the seamless infusion of strategies and tools that hone communication acumen, seamlessly integrated into the theoretical and practical facets of education. The innovative forum of the nonviolent communication workshop stands as an exemplar of such strategies, poised to flourish as a cornerstone of residency and enduring education.
