SUMMARY:

Spinal cord trauma (SCT) has become one of the most serious challenges that appear today in humanity. Its effects are overwhelming and its repercussions in the social, physical and psychic spheres are tremendous, given the important changes in the functional state of the individual in his new condition. According to the World Health Organization, more than a billion people in the world live with some form of disability. Among these, more than two hundred million present considerable functional difficulties arising from spinal cord traumas caused by injuries such as falls, land transport accidents (LTA), firearm projectile (FP) and shallow water dives. Care for people with disabilities requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach at the various levels of care and complexity. However, factors such as the low qualification of health professionals, resulting from the deficiency in the curricular education of each category; the low number of continuing education activities in health services; disinformation of family members and society; and the lack or absence of supplies for the care of these individuals. In this perspective, the study aims to evaluate the health attention of people with SCT, regarding opportunities and numerous challenges in the scope of Primary Care and to propose a line of care with the Family Health Unit of Aparecida as a pilot project for the Municipal Health Department of Natal/RN.
