SUMMARY:

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines patient safety as the reduction, to an acceptable minimum, of the risk of unnecessary harm linked to health care, and the safe use of medicines was the third global goal proposed by WHO. Adverse drug events occur due to errors in prescription, dispensation or administration of medications. Prescribing is the most common task in medical practice, however, preparing a medical student to do so is a major challenge. In this sense, using a m-learning tool, such as a smartphone application, would assist in this process, due to the availability and ease of access, serving as a learning tool. Objective: To develop a smartphone application to assist medical students in preparing a safe prescription at an educational institution, and in this way, improve prescription safety to reduce errors associated with medications. Methods: This is an action research developed in 4 stages: 1) exploratory phase, in which the need for a new intervention to improve safety in medical prescription was observed; 2) planning, with the agreement, with the teams of the Nucleus of Patient Safety of Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes and of Hospital Hospitalar, of the content of the application; 3.a) content development with the cataloging of drugs and review of information using the platforms UpToDate®, Micromedex® Drug Info and the leaflets available on the ANVISA website; 3.b) development of the application, with the insertion of the cataloged information in a smartphone program and publication of it on downloadable platforms; 4) evaluation of the tool by students (undergraduates and medical residents), preceptors and collaborators of the HUOL pharmacy team, through a structured questionnaire with questions using the Likert satisfaction scale with open space for criticism and suggestions. Results: A free smartphone application was developed for institutional use, with basic information related to 72 high surveillance drugs standardized in this teaching hospital, in addition to an e-book with the same information.
