SUMMARY:

Medical Residency is a post-graduate modality with a specialization level, based on in-service training. There has been a growing interest in the use of Competency-Based Medical Education in the last few decades, whose focus is on educational outcomes. Assessment is one of its central pillars, and it should be formative and provide feedback. Competency-Based Medical Education has been implemented in some countries, with different structures. In Brazil, the National Medical Residency Commission took the first steps in this direction, defining the educational objectives for various specialties, including Diagnostic Radiology. The systematization of competency assessment methods involves multiple variables. The literature lacks specific assessment tools for Radiology, especially in Brazil. This study aims to develop and implement a formative assessment tool for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Onofre Lopes University Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. It is a study with a qualitative, exploratory and intervention approach, with three stages. The first two consisted of workshops with residents and preceptors, one for training in competency assessment, and the other for the collective construction of an assessment tool suitable for Radiology. In the third stage, the researchers followed the initial application of the instrument by the preceptors. The two workshops were attended by the three researchers, sixteen preceptors and five residents. The resulting assessment tool includes seven competencies that must be assessed against what is expected at the resident level, and an overall scale of the evaluation. The instrument was applied 33 times in practice scenarios, over a period of six months. The realization of the training workshops for preceptors, with the introduction of a new culture of assessment, was fundamental for the construction and initial experience in the application of the assessment tool. This tool presented viability, low cost and had good acceptability between preceptors and residents.
