CONTEXT: Health education has undergone major changes and the advent of medical and multiprofessional residency programs in Brazil has enabled service professionals to discuss and reflect on SUS principles and guidelines. “Evaluation” is a term that covers any activity that highlights learning and that can be used to make a judgment about it. OBJECTIVE: To build an evaluation tool for residents of the Multiprofessional Residency in Health in Maternal and Child Care, from the perspective of competency performance at the Ana Bezerra University Hospital, with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte as the training institution responsible for the residency. METHODOLOGY: Interventional study, with participants from the first year of 2019 as participants, tutors and the coordination of the residence. The study was carried out in three stages: The first consisted of a workshop with residents and tutors to discuss and elaborate a matrix of desired skills in the residence and the new evaluation instrument. The second stage counted with the participation of tutors and the coordination of the residence to adjust the proposed instrument. Third stage was characterized by the analysis of the speeches, using Bardin as a reference. RESULTS: The workshops resulted in the construction of two instruments. The first is called the competence matrix and the second is called competence assessment instrument. The discussions for the construction of these two instruments revealed the need for changes in the evaluation process using the multiprofessional residency at the Ana Bezerra University Hospital.
