SUMMARY:

Motherhood is usually related to birth, life, dreams come true. However, death is often imposed, leading parents and professionals to experience situations of anguish and frustration. Perinatal deaths include fetal deaths (in utero) and neonatal deaths, that is, those that occur between 22 weeks of gestation and seven full days after birth. Research involving the training and performance of health professionals in dealing with situations involving death and grief is scarce. Thus, it is relevant to know the experience of doctors residing in Gynecology and Obstetrics who work daily to welcome perinatal loss in state maternity hospitals. This is a study, with a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approach, with a transversal cut. The research participants were 10 residents of the Medical Residency Program in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte who work to welcome women and families in situations of perinatal loss. The construction of the data occurred through individual interviews, guided by a semi-structured script. The content of the interviews was transcribed, organized and coded, aiming at grouping excerpts from similar reports. Then, the product was analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. After analyzing the material, four themes emerged, namely: Health training for the care of women with perinatal loss; Role of the obstetrician professional in the face of perinatal loss situations; Intervention strategies used by residents; Difficulties of professionals in the service. The results reveal that the residents recognize that they do not have specific training for the reception of women with perinatal loss, during the specialization period, requiring the support of a trained preceptor and the institution. The interviewees understand that the role of the obstetrician in this context consists, above all, in communicating the death to the family, clarifying its probable cause, providing guidance in relation to future pregnancies. Thus, it is understood the relevance of reflecting on the training of health professionals with regard to the skills developed in the professional training process, as well as the need for institutional guidelines to guide service professionals in their interventions and actions of preceptorship that involve the reception of women in situations of perinatal loss.
