SUMMARY:

Maternity is usually related to birth, life, fulfilled dreams. However, many times death imposes itself leading parents and professionals to experience situations of anguish and frustration. Perinatal deaths are those that occur in the period that begins at the 22nd week of pregnancy and ends seven complete days after birth, including fetal deaths (in utero) and neonatal deaths. Research involving the training and performance of health professionals in the care of situations involving death and bereavement are scarce. Thus, it becomes relevant to know the experience of resident doctors in Gynecology and Obstetrics who work daily in the reception of perinatal loss in the maternity wards of the State. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, of transversal cut. The participants of the research were 10 residents of the Program of Medical Residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte who act in the reception of women and families in situation of perinatal loss. The construction of the data occurred through the realization of individual interviews, guided by a semi-structured script. The content of the interviews was transcribed, organized and codified, with the objective of grouping together passages from similar reports. Then, the product was analyzed through the thematic analysis technique. After the analysis of the material, four themes emerged, namely: Health training for the care of women with perinatal loss; Role of the obstetrician in situations of perinatal loss; Strategies of interventions used by residents; Difficulties of professionals in the service. The results show that the residents recognize that they do not have specific training for the care of women with perinatal loss, during the specialization period, requiring the support of a trained preceptor and the institution. The interviewees understand that the role of the obstetrician in this context consists mainly in communicating the death to the family, clarifying its probable cause, and providing guidance regarding future pregnancies. Thus, they understand the relevance of reflecting on the training of health professionals in terms of the skills developed in the professional training process in the undergraduate and graduate experience, as well as the need for institutional guidelines that guide the professionals of the service in their interventions and preceptor actions involving the care of women in a situation of perinatal loss.
