SUMMARY:

Introduction: The use of diversified pedagogical strategies in undergraduate medical education has been increasing since the National Curriculum Guidelines (DCNs) of 2001. However, this change is still a challenge for professors and students in medical courses in Brazil. In the same vein, important topics such as smoking, one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide, are also poorly addressed in medical schools, resulting in students and resident physicians who have difficulty in listening, addressing and mentoring. smokers and former smokers. Objective: In this sense, the study aims to implement different pedagogical strategies for the teaching of smoking in the curriculum component “Discipline of Diseases of the Respiratory System” (DDSR) of the Medical School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Methodology: A descriptive study with fourth year students (VII semester) attending DDSR was conducted in two classes: T1 in the first semester and T2 in the second semester of 2018. Two educational strategies were used: a Virtual Community via Integral Management System platform of Academic Activities (SIGAA) and a University Extension Project. For eight weeks, students participated in the Virtual Community entitled “Using SIGAA as a Tool for Teaching Smoking”, receiving from the principal researcher videos, links, scientific articles and other smoking materials once a week, with seven days to comments and questions. At the end, they received commented answers, as well as free and reliable links to deepen that topic. For T2 students, the Extension Project “Smoking Group of Onofre Lopes University Hospital - HUOL” was also used, inserted in the compulsory curriculum component DDSR where students attended, on average, 3 group meetings over 6 weeks. together with the medical researcher and a multiprofessional team, discussing various aspects of smoking. Students' perceptions of these strategies were assessed with a Likert-scale online questionnaire. All were submitted to a pre and post-test with general questions about smoking. Results: Students' participation in the activities of the Virtual Community via SIGAA was lower than expected, being more intense in the first 3 weeks and without difference between T1 and T2. . The majority (59.8%) of the students answered that they participated in less than 30% of the activities. However, as for the contribution of the activities to learning, all agreed that it was positive in several respects. Almost half of the students answered that UFRN students and teachers do not have the habit of using SIGAA as a teaching-learning tool. Regarding participation in the Smoking Group, the students agreed that it had several positive aspects regarding learning about the theme. Everyone disagreed that the topics covered in the group had already been seen during the course. There was an increase in the number of post-test hits in both classes, although there was no statistical difference between them. Final Considerations: The positive perception of students about the diversification of teaching strategies proposed for the teaching of smoking, certainly stimulates their continuity and improvement, especially regarding the extension curriculum insertion, which emerges as a pioneer in undergraduate medicine at UFRN.
