Tobacco is one of the leading preventable causes of deaths worldwide. It is estimated that, during the last century, one hundred million people died due to their consumption, being the habit of smoking responsible for 12% of the adult mortality worldwide. Exposure to tobacco is associated with the occurrence of several pathologies, besides being an important risk factor for communicable diseases. It is noticeable that medical students at various levels of undergraduate and also resident physicians have many doubts about the approach and treatment of smokers or former smokers patients.  The objectives of the study were to implement non-conventional pedagogical strategies for the teaching of smoking in the medical course of UFRN-Natal and to describe the students ' perceptions regarding the educational strategies used to teach smoking. Two strategies were used: the Virtual community, through the Academic Activities Management System (SIGAA) – UFRN and an extension project "smoking group of the Onofre Lopes-HUOL University Hospital". A descriptive study was conducted, with students from two classes of the fourth year (VII semester) of medicine, in the first and second semesters of 2018, who attended the curricular component called the Discipline of Diseases of the Respiratory System (DDSR). In the two classes, at the beginning of the course, students were invited to participate in a distance learning activity through a Virtual community via SIGAA. The students received, once a week for 8 weeks, several topics about smoking, being available 7 days for comments and questions. During this period, the students received the commented answers, in addition to reliable and free links, and the discussion was available to the members of the Virtual community. All participants were submitted to a pre-test and, at the end of the semester, to a post-test on the subject of smoking. In the second class, besides the Virtual community, another educational strategy was also used for the teaching of smoking: participation in the extension project called "Smoking Group of the university Hospital Onofre Lopes-HUOL", as part Compulsory component of the DDSR curriculum. The students attended meetings with groups of smokers who wished to cease their habit, accompanied by the teacher (principal researcher) and a multidisciplinary team. To evaluate the students ' perceptions about the educational strategies used (Virtual Community and Extension action), an online questionnaire, with Likert scales, was sent to the two classes at the end of the study. Regarding the strategy via the Virtual community, it was observed that the adherence of the students was lower than expected, being pointed out by them the little stimulus to the use of the SIGAA by teachers in general as a teaching tool. There was no difference in the percentage of correct answers in the pre and post-test in relation to knowledge about smoking with the use of the teaching methodologies in question. Even so, the results of the Likert scales, both for the activity of Distance Learning and in the participation in the smoking group are encouraging, because in the students  opinion, after the teaching strategies, there was gain in learning and feel greater security to address Smokers and former smokers patients. They also consider the important practice in the learning process, they found the pleaser and didactic activities, among other positive points that stimulate to continue and improve the use of the methods.
