Introduction: Health education is often performed intuitively and following traditional pedagogical principles. There is currently a movement to insert well-established and proven pedagogical techniques in other areas of knowledge in medical education. The lack of pedagogical development of teachers and preceptors makes the teaching-learning process difficult, resulting in the training of residents focusing on knowledge rather than professional competence. In addition, it may cause discomfort to preceptors and teachers who, without specific preparation, on how to teach and evaluate learners / residents, do so intuitively or even move away from preceptorship impairing the quality of training. Preceptors are “experts” in performing all procedures, but without academic training about the teaching-learning process. Objectives: This study aims to identify the previous knowledge and possible difficulties of teachers and teachers for teaching in the residence of digestive endoscopy, aiming to systematize a training program aimed at the development of teaching skills of the teacher and preceptor in the digestive endoscopy program of the University Hospital Onofre Lopes (HUOL). Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study involving preceptors and teachers working in the digestive endoscopy residency program of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital. Initially, a questionnaire was applied to identify prior knowledge about teaching and learning, as well as the main difficulties faced in the exercise of preceptorship. Then, two educational training meetings were held and two manuals were prepared, one for residents and one for HUOL digestive endoscopy residency preceptors. At the end, the perceptions of residents and preceptors regarding the training process at the endoscopy residency were analyzed. Results: Eight preceptors participated, with less than five years of experience in the preceptorship prevalent (75%). education (37%). The main difficulty reported was related to the assessment of residents and the lack of pedagogical skills to discuss the process of training in residences. The elaborated manuals had the presentation of the entire residency program, from management and administrative issues to the residents' evaluation system. For the preceptors, specific topics on teaching strategies, assessment, feedback and adult learning were included. The perceptions of residents and preceptors were in agreement with regard to stimulating clinical reasoning, active learning and the use of feedback as relevant and present in the teaching-learning process of residence. Conclusion: The preceptors of the endoscopy residency are young, with little time in preceptorship and little pedagogical experience. The manuals may support teaching development, a fact recognized as relevant and lacking in the aforementioned residency program. Initiatives to improve the teaching-learning process have resulted in encouraging clinical thinking and active learning, as well as a more elaborate assessment with opportunity for feedback on the perceptions of residents and preceptors.
