RESUMO:

The Medical Residency Program (PRM) is a teaching modality for physicians, in the form of a specialization course, characterized by in-service training, on a 60-hour weekly basis, operating in health institutions, university or not, under the guidance from medical professionals of high ethical and professional qualifications, being recognized as the best way to insert medical professionals into professional life, under supervision, and training in a specialty. The appropriateness of the Direct Observation Procedural Skills (DOPS) assessment tool in the Anesthesiology Medical Residency Program of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL) aims to more fully assess the resident, based on competencies, contributing along with other forms of assessment to broaden the vision of their individual advances and weaknesses. Preceptors training workshops were developed using active teaching-learning methods, among these videos with simulations of the real work scenarios in the institution followed by reflection and group discussion, which allowed the standardization of the domains considered essential to be evaluated by DOPS. There were 39 evaluations involving 10 residents (91%), three of the first year, three of the second year and four of the third year. Only one resident was not assessed because of temporary withdrawal from PRM. Most residents were assessed more than once in different procedures, resulting in the “above-expected” status. Interestingly, the DOPS tool found more weaknesses in less complex procedures, probably attributed to a misperception of having already achieved the necessary skills in such procedures. Most self-assessments were in agreement with the assessments made by the preceptors, with more reflections and notes to be modified by the evaluated residents. The DOPS implementation process in the anesthesiology residency was successful, being the instrument well accepted and suitable for the evaluation of procedures in the referred program.
