RESUMO:

The presence of keratoconus has always made it difficult to calculate the patient's refractometry, either by means of retinoscopy (skiascopy) or by using the autorefractor. This way, it is sometimes difficult to find such values quickly and reliably in the day-to-day practice of the ophthalmological office. What’s more, the teaching of refractometry has always been a challenge for ophthalmologist training services. This is explained by the fact that it is an examination that demands a certain specific skill to be mastered in addition to the necessity of knowing physics, math and geometry to understand how to determine and cancel the so-called refractive vices (ametropies) of the optical system of the human eye. The HELPER KERATOCONUS app quickly and conveniently provides the theoretical measurement of refractometry from patient keratometry, which will be inserted into the refractor and then be refined. We conducted a teaching workshop on refractometry competence using the app. It is a qualitative, descriptive research that was developed at Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes - HUOL / UFRN. It involved residents and preceptors of the HUOL ophthalmology department. The first part of the experiment was composed by an expositive class of approximately 50 minutes, whose theme will be the functioning and use of the HELPER KERATOCONUS app. After this step, residents had a hands-on class, where they were trained to use the app in the attendance routine. After the use of the digital tool, the residents answered a semi-structured questionnaire, where information about teaching and learning activities was addressed. At the end of the estimated period, the HELPER KERATOCONUS app caused an improvement in the refractometry teaching / learning process among HUOL ophthalmology residents. In addition, an attendance routine was implemented in the refractometry of patients with keratoconus, with great satisfaction and incentive to future ophthalmologists.
