RESUMO:

Introduction: Neurological diseases present an increasing burden due to a growing elderly population of the world. Thus, there is a need to teach confidente general doctors to solve most of the neurological pathologies in their region of attendance. However, some physicians assume an attitude of distance from neurological patients due to a feeling of incapacity, insecurity, fear of the neuromedicine, which is the branch that brings together the disciplines that study the nervous system. This attitude is called neurophobia and is present in several regions of the globe affecting around 50% of students and doctors. The reasons reported in several studies are associated with the teaching of neuromedicine, mainly the complexity of neuroscience and neurological examination. The recognition of the reasons for installation and aggravation of this disease as well as the solutions to dismantle neurophobia need to be studied. Objectives: We intend to diagnose neurophobia and understand its development among UFRN undergraduates. Methodology: We proposed an explanatory mixed-method study including an electronic questionnaire with sociodemographic and Likert-type items on the four criteria related to neurophobia, namely: knowledge, difficulty, interest, and confidence. Sequentially, we conduct one focal group with 8 students and 5 semi-structured interviews. There was a statistical analysis of the quantitative variables, with the level of significance p <0.05. The categorical analysis of the qualitative corpus, according to Minayo, allowed the triangulation of the data. The study was approved by the institutional review board for ethical research under the number CAAE 79745317.5.0000.5295. Results: In the quantitative phase, we received 215 anonymous responses from the instrument. The data evidenced that 41.9% of the evaluated ones were considered neurophobic, and these students had a worse sensation of 4 criteria when compared to the control group. Gender, age, year of undergraduate course were not determinant factors for neurophobia in UFRN. There was a greater linear correlation between neurophobia and the perception of difficulty and degree of interest than the other criteria. In our institution neurophobia tended to grow throughout the medical course, corroborating the view that neuromedical education promotes neurophobia and not the reverse. In the qualitative phase, we recognize that the negative preconceived view of neuromedicine might come from family contact or picturesque details of films. We realized that the early origin of neurophobia may be the result of the teacher's performance. In the students' view, neuroscience teachers applied methodologies that did not prioritize contextualization; and throughout the course, the professors presented specific topics, which were of small relevance to the general practitioner. There are reports of the short time priority for neuromedicine in the dense curriculum of the course of the institution. The proposals were based on a change in the teacher's posture that may allow the curricular integration and the applicability of neuromedicine in the general context. Conclusion: Neurophobia prevails in the Northeast region of Brazil and it is more related to the perceptions of high difficulty and low interest in neuromedicine, possibly due to the poor performance of the teacher. Changes in the role of this traditional teacher aiming at significant adaptive learning, with active learning methodologies in an integrated neuromedicine curriculum, continuous and focused on general education, can be proposed to mitigate neurophobia among undergraduate students.
