RESUMO:

The aging population and it’s consequent increased longevity are striking phenomenons all around the world. In response to this challenge, specially concerning the health care of this population, a lot of medical schools in every continent have been developing medical education programs in the topics of Geriatrics. In order to discuss and better promote Geriatrics and Gerontology teaching on the Medical School of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) - Brazil, we have developed a research project encharged of diagnosing and improving these competencies. The study first analysed the geriatric competencies already declared on our Medical School curriculum. Then, an online survey was sent to all medical teachers of UFRN inquiring which geriatric competencies are usually taught on their curricular component and provoking them to add suggestions in order to improve Geriatric teaching on the institution. We have reviewed the current medical education literature for role models on geriatric competencies in undergraduate medical schools. Our results show that the geriatric competencies declared on the UFRN online platform must be updated. There are highest quality geriatrics competencies published in national and international medical schools curricula, which will support the construction of “UFRN Medical Course Essential Geriatrics Competencies”. We understand that despite some limitations, our curriculum explores the major competencies suggested by the Brazilian Geriatrics Society and the American Geriatrics Society, but we recognize that we still have to advance on the Palliative Care and Hospital Care competencies teaching for the elderly population. Interdisciplinarity and Curriculum Integration were the main suggestions disclosed by the online surveys. The competency matrix for the teaching of geriatrics in the medical school was elaborated and it was agreed with the application of the Delphi Strategy with a panel of specialists in Geriatrics working in the State of Rio Grande do Norte.
