RESUMO:

Introduction: Safe health care has become an indicator of quality and is intended to prevent adverse events, such as: falls, errors in medication administration, patient identification failures, surgical errors, hospital infections, improper handling of medical devices and equipment. The teaching of this subject in undergraduate courses is stimulated by the curriculum guide of the world health organization and by the national program of patient safety, although still incipient in the curricula of medical courses. At the UFRN Medical Course, it is offered as an elective course, but with little student participation. This project aimed to analyze the knowledge and introduce a course on patient safety for medical students of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), at the beginning of the boarding activities.

Methodology: A quasi-experimental, longitudinal study with a quantitative approach. The population was composed of students of the UFRN medical course, during a compulsory curricular course, held at the University Hospital Onofre Lopes (HUOL), from January to June 2017. A questionnaire structured with closed questions using the Likert scale was applied to students at the beginning and end of the internship to evaluate their knowledge about safe care. They also performed a medical prescription for a predetermined clinical case at the beginning and end of the stage, which was evaluated through safe prescription indicators. The students participated in a course taught by teachers and members of the HUOL Patient Safety Center.

RESULTS: 137 students participated, who started the internship at the time of the intervention. Regarding the initial questionnaire, we noticed poor knowledge about patient safety, where only 15% or less of the students studied public policies or claimed to know the National Patient Safety Program. After the course, there was a significant improvement in the response of several items. In the medical prescription activity, there was an improvement in the compliance of medical prescription items, comparatively between the moments of evaluations (before and after) in medical students.

Conclusion: Knowledge about patient safety is fragile in UFRN medical students and there has been significant improvement with participation in the introductory course on patient safety.
