BACKGROUND: In the Multiprofessional Health Residency Program format, preceptor has great importance and plays the role of health professional and practice preceptors, thus developing health care and teaching activities. These practices association often generates work overload and may decrease service quality and leave these professionals dissatisfied with the developed activities. OBJECTIVE: To identify Multiprofessional Health Residency Program preceptors profile at the Adult Intensive Care Unit area, whose activities are developed at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital, as well as to understand the difficulties faced by them in the development of their activities. METHODS: This is a descriptive study. For research, semi-structured and self-administered questionnaires were applied, using pre-established script and confidential, non-risky way, with sample taken for convenience. The study was submitted to and approved by the Ethics and Research Committee and all participants signed the Informed Consent Term. Results were analyzed with mixed descriptive statistics, being quantitative for absolute and relative frequency of the data contained in the answers, with mean and standard deviation, and qualitative for the subjective questionings analyzed based on the Bardin Thematic Content Analysis Method. RESULTS: The Multiprofessional Residency Program in Adult Intensive Care, 5th place in the national ranking, has a population of 82 preceptors involving the following specialties: physiotherapy, nursing, nutrition, psychology, social service and dentistry. We included 52 professionals. The sample was mostly composed by women, 38 years mean age, acting as physiotherapists. These professionals training average time was 14 years, while the preceptor average time was 4 years, being that the majority in the academic qualification category was at the level of specialization. In addition to this, they reported that the workload is not adapted to the preceptory activity reality. CONCLUSION: Present study results indicate that most of the professionals who perform the preceptory function did not have qualification, are not fulfilled and do not feel qualified for this function.
