RESUMO:

Formative assessment can be part of the teaching-learning process, and can contribute to the improvement of didactic tools. The aim of this study is to describe the implementation of a trainee’s performance assessment tool in the Medical Residency Program of Digestive Endoscopy (PRMED) using the DOPS instrument (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills), and to develop preceptor's qualification in performing evaluation of the endoscopic skills. Moreover, we analyzed the trainees and preceptor’s meaning and perception of this process. This is a qualitative, prospective, exploratory and interpretive research, carried out from November 2016 to February 2018, in the Onofre Lopes University Hospital Endoscopic Unit. The study population was the Gastroenterology and Digestive System Surgery’s trainees, who underwent their training during the study period and who accepted to participate in it.  This study comprised three steps: The first one comprised a PRMED preceptor training course to conduct performance assessments using the DOPS tool.  The second one was the DOPS tool use in the workplace. The last step consisted of trainees and preceptor’s semi-structured interviews in order to understand how they understood the implantation DOPS process.  Results: Most PRMED preceptors participated in the course (70%). Only one of the preceptors had previously participated in a training course. At the end of the course, all participants felt capable to conduct residents' assessments using the DOPS and felt it was possible to incorporate it into the workplace routine. The majority of preceptors (66.6%) stated that they did not know how to provide formative feedback before the course. .At the end of the assessment period, 66.6% of the preceptors stated that they found it difficult to give feedback a few times. They all found the experience of scoring through DOPS, satisfactory. Regarding trainees, all reported that the evaluations provided them with improved endoscopic procedures. About 83,4% of them stated that they had never been evaluated in practice in that hospital. Everyone felt comfortable receiving feedback in most of the time or on all occasions. Conclusion: It was noticed that the implementation of the DOPS was possible through the preceptors training course, allowing the suitable tool use, and through the recognition by preceptors and trainees of its formative aim and, therefore, of great importance for the teaching learning process.
