RESUMO:

Background: Epidemiological changes of diseases in the world and in Brazil result in the need of physicians able to attend patients with life-limmiting illness through palliative actions. In this context, the discipline of Palliative Care (PC) was created in medical school of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).

Objective: To describe the planning and development of undergraduate curricula in PC in medicine in UFRN.

Methods: Based on international guidelines recommendations, relevant contents,  multi-professional education and practical trainning were integrated through active learning methods. Formative, summative and practical evaluations were assessed and feedbacks provided. At the end of the semester, an electronic questionnaire was sent so studentes could evaluate the PC curricula.

Results: Fifteen students were registered in the optional component with a total of 45 hours divided into theoretical, practical trainning, evaluations, professionalism and feedbacks. The most praised educational stratagies were lectures, TBL, Role-play and Case Study. The performance of the students was satisfactory and similar between different years students.

Conclusion: The aim of using mainly active learning methods was achieved and student performance was satisfactory. The component is feasable and was positively evaluated.
